Domus de Maria – Representing A great Historical Importance





Domus de Maria, also known as “Comune di Domus de Maria” is a beautiful place located in the deep southwest of Cagliari in Sardinia. The territory has lots of breathtaking and eye pleasing natural wonders, ranging from the renowned and splendid beaches of the helmet of Chia to the mountains full of luxuriant woods. It is famous for its long beaches with baronial dunes, where age-old juniper plants grow undisturbed, and you may get a chance to see deers and boars in granite peaks and luxuriant woods.

History Of The Place
Domus de Maria was founded in the year 1700 when the peoples living in regions around it came here and start living. It had the famous and original nucleus farm that was founded by “The Scolopi Fathers”. The history of this city  is much older than the city itself. This territory was inhabited since the Nuragico period because of its geographical position or its natural charm. The famous nurghe Baccu Idda and the mysterious betili of Punta Su Sensu are the evidence of the Nuragic population that had inhabited the area, and these are the places you should visit when you are there, they say a lot about the history of Domus de Maria.
The place located across the street that connects Karalis and Nora had a great importance in the Roman history. The final abandonment of ancient Bithia took place gradually between the end of the fourth century BC and the beginning of the fifth century AD. 

Places To Visit in Domus de Maria
When you go to Domus de Maria you get an excellent opportunity to come face to face with the ancient history, culture and tradition of this island. Although the island is full of rare beauty filled with its endemic essences of enchanting colors and strong perfumes. But here are the few places you must visit in Domus de Maria:

·         Bithia: It has the the rare natural beauty that doesn’t go unnoticed. Bithia is an ancient city of the Phoenician Punic system in the village of Chia. There are lots of ancient artifact you will enjoy visiting those, there are remains of walls and houses, most of what Bithia has to offer is still hidden under the ground. The sandstone statue of the god Bes in bovine form, located where once stood the necropolis and a temple, now in the Archaeological Museum of Cagliari.

·         House Museum: Visit to the House Museum in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele is recommended if you want to explore the lifestyle and activities of everyday life of people who lives in Bithia. You will get to see various archaeological findings from the Phoenician era, Punic and Roman territory. You will get a chance to visit the reconstruction of a Phoenician-Punic tomb with grave goods. 

·         Tower of Chia: It is an incredibly fascinating vantage point, born to desire the Viceroy De Moncada in 1578. It was built for the purpose of defending the mouth of the Rio di Chia, an excellent point of water supply for pirates. Also known as Torre de saints forty de Quia, it used to be always armed, men were equipped with guns at this tower.

·         The Lighthouse of Cape Teulada: This place is Particularly romantic and provide great scenic drive.
One of the most important festival here is Fig Festival which you would not like to miss, it is celebrated in May and another is the feast of “S’Arroseri” in honor of a patron Saint of the village, Madonna Del Rosario, and it is celebrate on the 1st Sunday of October.
Situated on a magnificent vantage point, Domus de Maria is reached by a paved path that reproduces the old Roman roads, where you can enjoy a wonderful view of great beauty, it is visible from much of the coast, and is very impressive at night.
